Walnut Creek is a community with vision. As it has grown from a one-stop-light town with fewer than 10,000 people in 1960, it has planned its growth with foresight for the future.
Finally, the last cornerstone of civic life – our downtown library – is ready to come into the 21st Century. Demand for library services has grown significantly in recent years – 43,000 of our residents hold library cards and use is up 75 percent in the last 5 years alone – yet, the building has remained unchanged from the small community of 1960.
In early 2008, the City will demolish the 46-year-old library building – which has significant space, access, technology, noise, safety, seismic and energy-efficiency problems – and begin construction on a new library that will meet the growing needs of our community.
Our new Walnut Creek Library will be large enough to house the books and materials, computers and electronic resources, quiet and comfortable seating areas, and special program areas that meet the needs of Walnut Creek's residents today and in the future. Special areas include the Children's Wing and Garden, the Marketplace for new books and materials, the Business and Career Resource Center, and an Education and Conference Center.
